Categorize a variable

Learn me by follow me exercises

To divide a continuous variable into 2 or more categories, right click the variable in the middle panel if you are in “variables view window” or in the right panel if you are in “analysis design window”, right click and then click “Categorize” in the popup menu, or select “Variable” from main menu and then click “Categorize”.

A new window “Categorize a variable” will show up as below. You can categorize a variable based on equal number of observations (eg. tertiles, quartiles, quintiles) or by a cut point defined as a percentile or a specified value.  If you want to group the variable based on equal number of observations within each stratum of a group variable, you can specify a stratified variable. To do this, drop down the “Stratified by” text box and select the variable.
